Final Piece- Mieke de Court (Whitireia)

End statement- Mieke de Court (Whitireia)

I think the Exchange Project, for me, may have revolutionised the way I work with my jewellery. This project, combined with our brief for the term, focussed on materiality, has really opened my eyes to other ways of working which I had not experienced before. These past few weeks, engrossed in my Exchange piece, as well as doing a week-long workshop with Melinda Young, have really allowed me to design and make jewellery in a completely different dimension. Exploring the materiality of materials has actually been just plain fun!  So what lays before you,  sums up my experience of this amazing project; social, trans tasman design, experimentation, trials, trials and more trials, many a smashed up china plate and, principally, a satisfied maker.

Well, what a journey this has been to date. From having received a charming china plate and a cheeky 6 word story, I would never have imagined that igloos and inuits would eventually feature in my dreams.  But they are.  The Exchange Project seems to have well and truly infiltrated my mind. I’m enjoying it. I am curious as to where this journey is going to end. I’m not far off now, so I have a reasonable idea. But I know how these things go….I might dream a different dream tonight and have to make further alterations yet….

Beginning Statment

How did Tegan know that I was only days away from taking to a saucer with my saw? I had stocked up on sawblades already to tackle some unlucky saucer. I am resisting taking to it’s beautiful shiny surface….for now. Just while the saucer and I spend some time together. I am looking at it daily, turning it around in my hands. I think it will speak to me soon. Or, more likely, I will start talking to it :-) . And then there is my story from Iscariot Priest (sent by Rachel Gaynor.) Iscariot Priest writes 6 word stories. ‘How cool’ is my first thought. Can I cut each word out and make my own 6 word story?
