Final Piece: Forever- Rachel Gaynor

Ending Point- Rachel Gaynor

I really love the concept of time and the different ways the many different ways that it can be interpreted.

My object has been made to resemble a clock however it intentionally does not tell time. My piece contains a clock face that has been covered only revealing one number, 12. This number is significant because I believe that it is both the ending and the beginning, it’s the number that ties two days together and the time when New Years Eve ends and a new year begins. It is because of this that I believe 12 is number that signifies the continuous flow of time. I have finished the piece so that it looks worn and weathered, except for the clock face which has been left so that the number will show through clearly.

My piece is a result from the poem about time and the metal circle which looked old and tattered. It combines the concept of eternally moving time and the wear and damage that comes with it.

Mid Point Statement- Rachel Gaynor

So looking at my two sources I have decided that I want to make a piece that resembles a clock. This piece however will not tell time. I want to show the concept of “moving time.”

On the back of the clock I want to put something that symbolizes eternity so I’ve been doing a little reading into universal symbols. The most common types of symbols that have been popping up are symbols used by chemist and alchemy symbols.

To make the design on the back I used the most common symbol for time, which is an angled hourglass and the symbol for eternity, “the cross of infinity”. I used the cross of infinity picture as a base and then edited it in Photoshop, putting the hourglass in the middle and cleaning the picture up. This will be etched onto the back of my piece.

Text From Karren Dale to Rachel Gaynor

Time knows no sense in waiting for you
Waking after not sleeping
Dreaming while awake
Living only half as we wonder all the time
Time knows no sense in waiting for you.

Rachel Gaynor- Beginning Statment

Looking at both the material and text that I have received I feel like they fit together really well.

The poem seems to pretty much sum up the meaning of time really clearly. What I take away from it is that time continually runs, no matter what.

The part of my material that I have mainly been looking at is the shape. A circle to me represents eternity.

So looking at these two materials together I think of how time runs tirelessly and continuously in cycles such as: Monday- Sunday, Summer-Winter, January- December

It also makes me wonder about the other side; what happens when time stops. If we are to believe the Mayan calendar 2012 theory then I guess it means that the world will end?

These two materials remind me of a film I saw a couple of years ago called “The Girl Who Lept Through Time”. In this film there is a line that I think relates very well to the poem, “Time waits for no one.” I think I’m going to watch this movie again and then do some research on the flow of time!
