silvia’s work in progress

ring made out of the given material, though it snapped unfortunately in the vicei decided on the ones found in a pen rather than the 2 on the left which i tried to makebox and lid of ring with holes so the springs could fit in so it closes- like a jack in the boxputting a silver ring band, as the giver material seemed to fragilehow teh ring would look if the box was to close, however i ran out of time make the mechanism to keep it shut, though i think the final piece is also good

Silvia – End Point statement

My final piece became a simpler version of what I originally planned, however, I am still happy with the design. It is playful and the dark brown of the material and a silver ring shank represent the ‘black and white’ as quoted from the text; well as much as I could incorporate those two colours. I’m happy that I managed to incorporated a red and yellow spiral. However, due to the fact that I left myself with little time to finish the piece, I never ended up making the lid, though I think the ring still works well to represent certain lines from the text which stood out to me, such as, ‘black, white’/ ‘red, yellow’, ‘detach from body’, and ‘spiralling’. I think the final piece is fun, infant- like and I hope when people view the ring or wear it they can see the playfulness and infant representations through the colours, spring and movement, the block- like shapes I formed out of my recieved material and therefore, are inspired to think about childhood memories.

The only part I’m dissapointed about with my final piece is that I know I could have finished it much better, by polishing and joining the components together alot better, this was due to my poor time management and the fact I left myself limited time once all my other uni work was due to complete it.

Overall, I found this project worth pursuing, and it goes to show that inspiration can come from anywhere, from any text, and any piece of material. Also that in future if I am ever stuck for inspiration I can find a text and ,materials and try to incorporate them into a body of work.

silvia's final piece

silvia’s midpoint

For my piece I’ve decided to make a ring out of the material I was given. The idea behind this ring is very much inspired from the lyrics I was given with the first line few lines saying……….. Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
                       lets me see.

From this I think of infancy, and infancy is a fun, playful time, with toys, movement, interesting things, so I want the ring to be black and white from first glance but then when you look closer or open a hinge, red and yellow jump out and memories are restored.

The other part of the text I want to incorporate is ….’Push the envelope. Watch it bend. Over thinking, over analysing separates the body from the mind’.

So I want the ring to have movement in it and be able to detach from the body in order to separate; in order to represent ‘the body separating from the mind’.

‘We’ll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one’s been’. ‘Spiral out. Keep going … going….’

From these lines I ill incorporate a spring to represent the spiral.

Therefore,  I want to figuratively depict these line.s while making a ring that is playful, infant like and when it is viewed, memories are sparked of infancy, so I’m thinking along the lines of a ring with a lid and hinge to close it, where two red and yellow spirals jump out. Although there is not much time left, so the design may need to be modified. The material I received with be the basis of the ring and lid.

My initial reaction to the material I was given was a positive one. I realy like the dark rich colour of what looks like a cut up bowling ball. Also from a quick test with sawing through the material, there should be ways I can cut and shape it to make an intersting object/ jewellery.

The text I was given was very interesting and I believe they are song lyrics I did some research on the internet and I managed to listen to the song. However, listening to the song seemed to change my perception of the lyrics. When you read the lyrics they  seem almost like a poem, althoguh i guess this is what lyrics are. Although actaully listening to the song, which, from memory was a more heavy metal style of music I didnt like it too much, and so when I come up with the concept and main message behind the text i recieved, i will stick to just reading and disiphering the underlinning message with out the added influence of music.

To me the text is about  remembering the past. at first the memory seems grey and the images i suppose are unclear, however, then colour comes- red and yellow. There is part of the text about ‘over analysing separates the body from the mind’ and the desire to want to ‘feel connected’. So im thinking my object will be along the lines of something that can be dissconnected from the body, that you want to reconnect with. And I will incorporate the material, which is dark and contrast this with some bright reds and yellows which ‘reach out’.

I feel there is alot going on in this text and i realy need to just pick a main idea i want to focus on, so i realy only have a few days left till this project is due so i will do my best!!

teh design is yet to be

LATERALUS (written by TOOL)

Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must

Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.

Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see there is so much more
and beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind.

Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.

I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected
enough to step aside and weep like a widow
to feel inspired, to fathom the power,
to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral
of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I lose myself
between the sounds and open wide to suck it in,
I feel it move across my skin.
I’m reaching up and reaching out,
I’m reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one’s been.
We’ll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one’s been.

Spiral out. Keep going … going….
